Let's begin.
1. Shampoo:
Look for shampoos made for a specific hair type is recommended.
Don't know your type? That's okay, we will cover that information in a later blog. For now, you can't go wrong with products that are labeled PH balanced, and look for labels that say hydrants or "for dry hair".
- Find two you like. Switch them periodically
- To avoid build up, find a good clarifying shampoo.
- Avoid products containing sulfates, silicones, and parabens
Find a conditioner with protein in it. Protein is the only thing that is actually absorbed into the hair shaft.
- Pay attention to the "slip" it should feel silky and soft not slimy.
- Avoid products with mineral oil or petroleums.
- Look for products with urea, lactic acid, and lecithin.
3. Moisturizing:
Moisturizers are designed to coat your hair and help it hold moisture. Oil is not a moisturizer. Apply oil after you moisturize. Good oils include:
- Olive
- Shae Butter
- Jojoba
- Safflower
- Lavender
- Peppermint
4. Heat:
Use heat sparingly (flat irons, blow dryer, hot comb, crimpers, etc.). Heat dries out the little moisture we have in our hair. When using heat:
- Always use heat protectant, hair burns at 400 F and up
- Air dry as much as possible, if you must use the blow dryer, try to wait at least 30min. before starting
- Always use a low setting
5. Nutrition:
Nutrition is also one of the key factors to growing healthy hair that will stay put.
A few tips:
- Take a multivitamin
- Drink lots of water
- Exercise
Bonus tips:
- Wash your comb and brush
- Trim hair
- Limit chemical appliances
